Homemade Shrimp Stock

Posted in : Food on by : Tiffany Tags: ,

Sometimes a recipe calls for homemade shrimp stock. Like for our Shrimp and Grits for instance. It’s one of those things that you may not use often, but something easy to make when you do. A good way to prepare is to save the shrimp peels, tails, and/or heads. It’s simple, just put them in a baggie in the freezer for when you are ready to make the stock. Or, you can do like we did, and made it the same day we made our Shrimp and Grits and used the inedible parts from the shrimp to make our stock.

Shrimp Stock

Shrimp Stock

  • 4-5 large carrots
  • 2 large onions
  • 4-5 celery stalks
  • 2 Tbsp peppercorn
  • 6 sprigs fresh thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • raw shrimp inedible
  • 2 whole cloves garlic
  • 6-7 quarts of water
  • add salt to taste

  1. In an 8 quart stockpot add all ingredients except the salt and bring to a boil.
  2. Cover and reduce heat to a simmer for about an hour.
  3. Add salt for taste.
  4. Strain stock.
  5. Ready to use.

What are the benefits of making your own Shrimp Stock?

Besides the fact that you are making your own stock out of fresh ingredients, you can control the sodium content as well as tweak it to your liking.
